DSN for Global Trade/CITD Launch First Supply Chain and Logistics Apprenticeship Program Cohort

The first cohort of the Supply Chain and Logistics Apprenticeship Program (SCLAP) was officially launched on October 15th with the start of the Principles of Importing and Exporting course at Southwestern College’s Higher Education Center in Otay Mesa. The course is part of the apprenticeship program’s Related Supplemental Instruction, which is meant to enhance the on-the-job training (OJT) the apprentices receive through their employers.
This first cohort of SCLAP includes 8 apprentices who are working full-time and attending classes three times a week in the evenings. Through the OJT, apprentices learn competencies associated with the Cargo and Freight Agent occupation, which has different titles in the industry including Cargo Agent, Documentation Clerk, Freight Broker, Logistics Coordinator, and others. Employers with apprentices participating in the program include CASAS International Brokerage and Grupo Logistics, local customs brokers and freight forwarders with offices in Otay Mesa.
The Deputy Sector Navigator for Global Trade (DSNGT) and the San Diego CITD developed the apprenticeship program through a grant awarded by the California Community College’s California Apprenticeship Initiative – New and Innovative Grant Program. The DSNGT and CITD collaborated with local employers in logistics and international trade to develop the program standards, which were approved by the State of California’s Division of Industrial Relations’ Department of Apprenticeship Standards (DAS). Recruitment of apprentices and employers for the program is ongoing. For additional information about SCLAP, visit https://apprenticeship.sandiegocitd.org.

DSN for Global Trade/CITD Promote New Supply Chain and Logistics Apprenticeship Program at Apprenticeship Career Fair

The Department of Rehabilitation, in partnership with the Department of Industrial RelationsDivision of Apprenticeship Standards, held its first ever San Diego Apprenticeship Career Fair on August 24th, 2018 at the State of California offices in the Mission Valley area of San Diego. The event was open to the public and provided an opportunity for attendees to learn about the various apprenticeship programs available in the region, including new programs in non-traditional apprenticeship fields that have been developed as part of the California Apprenticeship Initiative – New and Innovative grant program of the  California Community College Chancellor’s Office.

Over 200 people attended and more than 17 apprenticeship programs exhibited at the event, including the Deputy Sector Navigator for Global Trade (DSNGT)/San Diego CITD’s Supply Chain and Logistics Apprenticeship Program (SCLAP), which trains apprentices for the Cargo and Freight Agent occupation. The SCLAP combines paid on-the-job training with classroom lessons. Apprentices in the program take courses from Southwestern College’s International Logistics and Transportation Program while working full-time. Additionally, apprentices will have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications in supply chain management through the DSNGT/San Diego CITD’s SCPro Fundamentals certification program, which is backed by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP).

Attendees at the event also had the opportunity to explore job vacancies, speak to local college and training providers, meet employers who take on apprentices, and get advice on completing applications.
